China, known as the world's factory, is increasingly turning to industrial robots as a solution to rising wages and an aging population. China installed over half of all industrial robots globally in 2022. The country's drive for factory automation is driven by its aging population and ambitions to move up the manufacturing value chain. While the factory-automation market has experienced a downturn, there are signs of recovery with increasing orders growth for companies like Fanuc. Chinese companies are also catching up, particularly in collaborative robots, but foreign companies still dominate in higher-end products. A strong presence in China, Americas, and Europe positions Fanuc well for future growth.

Elon Musk's recent visit to Beijing highlighted the changing power dynamics between Tesla and the Chinese government. Despite facing tough competition from homegrown rivals, Musk secured assurances that Tesla can roll out its self-driving technology in China. The trip also allowed China to showcase its openness to American businesses and emphasize its tight regulatory controls over data. However, the meetings underscored that China now needs Tesla less to fuel its electric vehicle market. Analysts believe the visit was a win for Musk, but it remains to be seen if Tesla's declining fortunes in China can be reversed.

China is determined to become a robot superpower, driven by a combination of national pride and demographic challenges. The country has already made significant progress in industrial automation, with half of all industrial robots installed worldwide last year being in China. However, China's ambition extends beyond industrial use, as it aims to produce humanoids and service robots to address labor shortages and boost productivity in various sectors, including agriculture and elder care. The government is investing heavily in robotics research and pushing for self-sufficiency in the production of robots. Chinese people generally have a positive attitude towards robots, viewing them as job creators rather than threats.

The Quest to Give AI Chatbots a Hand—and an Arm

Covariant, a robot software company, has developed a chatbot interface that can not only discuss items it sees but also manipulate them. Powered by the RFM-1 model, which combines language understanding with action capabilities, the chatbot is a step toward giving robots more general and flexible abilities. Covariant's strategy is similar to Tesla's use of data from sold cars to train its self-driving algorithms. While promising, the challenge lies in acquiring enough data to train models for robots with broader capabilities. Other companies, including Google DeepMind, are also working on generating data for training robots.

The U.S. measures to limit the export of advanced AI chips to China may create an opportunity for Huawei to expand in its home market as Nvidia retreats. Huawei has been developing its own chips comparable to Nvidia's, but still lags behind in performance and ecosystem. However, if Huawei can replicate Nvidia's ecosystem and overcome intellectual property rights challenges, it could grab Nvidia's market share in China. This aligns with Huawei's goal of becoming a key provider of computing power for AI and promoting self-sufficiency in China.

Nvidia plans to launch its new technology for humanoid robots in the first half of 2025, aiming to establish its presence in the growing robotics sector. The Jetson Thor computers, introduced earlier this year, are part of Nvidia's efforts to develop robots with improved autonomy and human interaction capabilities. Rather than manufacturing robots directly, Nvidia positions itself as a technology provider and collaborates with robot manufacturers like Siemens and Universal Robots. While humanoid robots present significant potential, widespread deployment is not expected until after 2025. China is also making significant advancements in humanoid robotics.
