The Quest to Give AI Chatbots a Hand—and an Arm

Covariant, a robot software company, has developed a chatbot interface that can not only discuss items it sees but also manipulate them. Powered by the RFM-1 model, which combines language understanding with action capabilities, the chatbot is a step toward giving robots more general and flexible abilities. Covariant's strategy is similar to Tesla's use of data from sold cars to train its self-driving algorithms. While promising, the challenge lies in acquiring enough data to train models for robots with broader capabilities. Other companies, including Google DeepMind, are also working on generating data for training robots.
