Burger Singh, an Indian quick-service restaurant chain, faced a significant financial downturn in the fiscal year ending March 2024. The company's losses surged over six-fold during this period, despite a 34% year-on-year growth in operating revenue. Burger Singhโ€™s revenue from operations grew to Rs 77.7 crore in FY24 from Rs 57.8 crore in FY23, its annual financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies show. The 12-year-old company operates as a quick-service restaurant, offering a diverse menu of burgers, sides, desserts, and beverages through a combination of self-owned and franchise outlets. Burger Singh derives its revenue from three sources: sales from its own stores, franchise goods sales, and franchise services. In FY24, sales of food and beverages from its own stores contributed 48% of the total operating revenue, which grew by 60% to Rs 37.66 crore. Revenue from the sale of franchises and the sale of goods to franchise stores stood at Rs 10.81 crore and Rs 28.6 crore, respectively. For the food and beverages startup, the cost of procurement became the largest cost center forming 43% of its overall cost. In the line of scale, this cost grew 31.3% to Rs 39.2 crore in FY24 from Rs 29.9 crore in FY23. Burger Singh has witnessed a 54% surge in its employee benefits to Rs 18.37 crore in FY24. The commission, traveling, legal, and advertising are other overheads that pushed the total expenditure up by 43.7% to Rs 91.1 crore in FY24 from Rs 63.4 crore in FY23. The 43.7% increase in the total cost outpaced the revenue growth, resulting in losses which spiked 6.3X to Rs 27.9 crore in FY24. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin stood at -94.76% and -30.94%, respectively. On a unit level, Burger Singh spent Rs 1.17 to earn a rupee in FY24. Notably, Burger Singhโ€™s cash and bank balances stood at Rs 19.51 crore with a total current assets standing at Rs 31.3 crore in FY24. In December 2023, Burger Singh raised its pre Series A round from Turner Morrison and existing backers at a valuation of $52 million. The company has raised over $12 million to date and operates more than 175 outlets spanning 75 cities.

However, the Lightspeed-backed company has yet to achieve significant scale. Teachmintโ€™s revenue from operations spiked to Rs 17.1 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2024 from Rs 8.15 crore in FY23, its consolidated financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies show. Teachmint sells education software solutions through subscriptions to schools and teachers. The sale of software solutions accounted for 73% of the operating revenue which increased by 56% to Rs 12.5 crore in FY24. The rest of the income is derived from the sale of devices like biometrics, interactive flat panels, GPS devices, among others. The Bengaluru-based company firm managed to control its overall cost, reduced by 26.6% to Rs 160 crore in FY24 from Rs 218 crore in FY23. Key areas of cost reduction include employee benefits, marketing, and IT which dwindled by 21.2%, 63.6%, and 9.1% respectively. The 2X surge and controlled expenditure helped Teachmint reduce its losses by 39.2% to Rs 110 crore during the last fiscal year from Rs 181 crore in FY23. Excluding non-cash ESOP costs, the companyโ€™s losses stood at Rs 82 crore for the fiscal year ending March 2024. Its ROCE and EBIDTA margins stood at -24.7% and -198%, respectively. On a unit level, the company spent Rs 9.36 to earn a rupee in FY24. Importantly, the firm has a total current assets of Rs 440 crore including Rs 34 crore of cash and bank balances in the last fiscal year. The companyโ€™s transformation from pre-revenue to a significant revenue jump is largely driven by shifting its focus to digitize schools. Entrackr reported about the strategic move in April last year. Teachmint faced significant challenges in FY24, including laying off over 70 employees. It has raised over $100 million in funding, with a $78 million Series B round in October 2021 at a valuation of $500 million. However, it has not raised any additional funding in the last three years. Its competitor Classplus achieved a two-fold revenue increase to Rs 213 crore in FY24, while its newer rival, Lead School, recorded 25% growth to Rs 370 crore in revenue in the same period.

Qure.aiโ€™s revenue from operations grew to Rs 141 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2024 from Rs 77 crore in FY23, its consolidated financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies show. Qure.ai offers AI-driven solutions designed to assist radiologists and physicians in diagnosing critical conditions such as tuberculosis, lung cancer, and stroke. In the last fiscal year, sales of these tools and software contributed 87.23% of the companyโ€™s operating revenue, doubling to Rs 123 crore. The remaining revenue was generated from the sale of healthcare products. In line with many tech and AI-driven companies, employee benefits made up more than half of Qure.aiโ€™s total expenses. B2B e-commerce platform ApnaKlub sustained its growth momentum in the last fiscal year, with gross revenue nearly doubling. Despite this rapid growth, the company reduced its losses by 14%, bringing them below Rs 50 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2024. Apnaklubโ€™s gross revenue spiked to Rs 536.78 crore in FY24 from Rs 278.32 crore in FY23, its financial statements show. Apnaklub is a B2B wholesale platform which connects retailers and kirana stores, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands. With Rs 250 crore, the sale of personal care products topped the collection chart in FY24, followed by beverages at Rs 95.34 crore during the last fiscal year. Revenue from home care and processed foods stood at Rs 82 crore and Rs 80.6 crore, respectively. The firm also has earned Rs 5 crore from the interest on long-term investments which took its total revenue to Rs 541 crore in FY24. The cost of materials accounted for 86% of the total expense which spiked 84.83% to Rs 508.05 crore in FY24 from Rs 278 crore in FY23. Employee benefit expenses grew by 33.84% to Rs 31.60 crore in FY24 while transportation expenses rose by 41.56% to Rs 11.41 crore. Other expenses added another Rs 38.69 crore, making the total expense to surge by 77.4% to Rs 589.75 crore in FY24. In the end, the companyโ€™s net loss shrank by 13.84% to Rs 47.93 crore in FY24 from Rs 55.63 crore in FY23. Its losses excluding ESOP cost stood at Rs 45.9 crore. The company reported an EBITDA loss of Rs 44.7 crore, while its adjusted EBITDA loss was at Rs 42.63 crore in the last fiscal. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin stood at -79.36% and -8.25%, respectively. On a unit basis, the company spent Rs 1.1 to earn a rupee of operating revenue. ApnaKlub reported cash and bank balances of Rs 39.13 crore and current assets of Rs 90.55 crore in FY24. According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, decade-old Treebo has secured Rs 566 crore (approximately $70 million) in funding from investors including Accor, Elevation Capital, Matrix Partners, and Bertelsmann. The companyโ€™s most recent major funding, amounting to $16 million, was raised in June 2021. Treebo competes directly with Bloom Hotels and FabHotels. In FY24, Bloom Hotels saw its operational revenue rise by 73.6% to Rs 250 crore, with a profit of Rs 14 crore. This pushed its advertising costs up by 113% to Rs 1,315 crore in FY24 from Rs 616 crore in FY23. Gameskraft employee benefits grew 23.5% to Rs 463 crore in FY24. This includes Rs 12 crore as ESOP cost which is settled in cash. Its legal, communication, domain, web hosting, and other overheads took the overall cost up by 71.7% to Rs 2232 crore in FY24 from Rs 1300 crore in FY23. The more than two-fold increase in advertising costs outpaced Gameskraft's revenue growth, causing its profits to drop by 10.8% to Rs 947 crore in FY24 from Rs 1,062 crore in FY23. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin stood at 69.4% and 37.46% respectively with an expense-to-earning ratio of Rs 0.64. At the end of FY24, Gameskraft's total current assets were recorded at Rs 1,680 crore with the cash and bank balance of Rs 306 crore. In the real-money gaming sector, MPL reported a 22.2% increase in revenue from operations to Rs 1,068 crore in FY24, while also achieving positive cash flow during the year. Gameberry saw a 46.9% growth in revenue to Rs 461.7 crore, with a 150% surge in profit to Rs 92.8 crore in the same period. Meanwhile, major competitors such as Dream11 and A23 have yet to release their financial results for FY24.

The board at Good Flippinโ€™ Burgers has passed a special resolution to issue 34,366 Series A1 cumulative compulsory convertible preference shares at an issue price of Rs 8739.56 each to raise Rs 30 crore, its regulatory filing accessed from the RoC shows. With this, the company has secured $8.6 million to date including a $4 million Series A round led by Tanglin Venture Partners in June 2023. According to TheKredible estimate, the company has been valued at around Rs 400 crore or $48 million (post-money). This marked a 3X growth in the valuation when compared to its last funding. Founded by Viren Dโ€™silva, Sijo Mathew, and Sid Marchant, Good Flippinโ€™ Burgers currently has 25 outlets across Mumbai, Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida. The outlets offer delivery services directly through their website and online aggregators such as Zomato and Swiggy. Five-year-old Good Flippinโ€™ Burgers reported strong growth in its scale during FY23 as its operating revenue spiked 3.58X to Rs 32.53. When it comes to the bottom line, the company posted Rs 3.91 crore loss in the fiscal year ending March 2023. Itโ€™s yet to disclose its FY24 numbers. The Mumbai-based startup competes with Burger Singh, Whataburger, and Biggies Burger. In September 2022, Biggies Burger secured Rs 5.5 crore in seed round led by Indian Angel Network. Burger Singh also bagged Rs 30 crore in a Series A round led by Negen Capital in July 2022.

On a year-on-year basis, Awfisโ€™ revenue from operations grew 55.8% to Rs 849 crore in FY24 from Rs 545 crore in FY23, its consolidated financial statements disclosed in the stock exchange filing show. On a sequential basis, the firm posted a 5% increase in revenue to Rs 232 crore in Q4 FY24 from Rs 221 crore in Q3 FY24. Founded in 2015, Awfis offers customized office spaces for startups, SMEs, and large corporations including ancillary services like food and beverages, IT support, and infrastructure services among others. Income from co-working space rental and allied services formed 73% of the total operating revenue which spiked 47.7% to Rs 619 crore in FY24 from Rs 419 crore in FY23.
