Bits & Bytes: Meta to face more lawsuits in Japan over fake ads

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is facing lawsuits in Japan over fraudulent investment advertisements featuring fake celebrity endorsements. Around 30 plaintiffs are seeking at least $2 million, claiming that the tech giant did not do enough to prevent these scams. The plaintiffs argue that Meta should have investigated and prevented the posting of these fraudulent ads. In other news, Apple and Goldman Sachs have been ordered to pay fines totaling $90 million over their handling of the Apple Card credit-card business. The regulators found issues with customer service, fraud handling, and unresolved charge disputes. Additionally, LinkedIn has been fined €310 million for breaching users' personal data in targeted advertising. Finally, Starlink terminals, owned by Elon Musk, have sold out in Zimbabwe and five cities in Nigeria due to high demand, prompting local internet service providers to lower their prices.
