The future of computer chips for artificial intelligence (AI) may require a slowdown in the rapid pace of change in AI technology. Graphics processing units (GPUs) have been the go-to choice for training and running AI models, but as the industry moves towards standardized model designs, there is an opportunity to develop custom chips that are more energy-efficient, smaller, and cheaper. Companies like Amazon and Google have already developed their own custom AI chips, and while there are challenges in terms of flexibility and interoperability, a combination of different types of chips will likely be used in future AI models.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has emerged as a strong competitor to Nvidia in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip market. AMD's new MI300 chip outperforms Nvidia's H100 chip in terms of specifications, and the company expects to sell $3.5 billion worth of MI300s in 2023. AMD's focus on CPUs for data-center servers and GPUs for gaming consoles has paid off, with its market value growing 100-fold to $270 billion. However, AMD still faces tough competition from Nvidia's dominance in AI accelerator chips, but its strong hardware and partnerships position it as a viable alternative.

NVIDIA and AMD plan to sell new AI GPUs in China to align with U.S. export restrictions on advanced semiconductor technology. NVIDIA will offer a "B20" GPU, while AMD introduces the Radeon AI PRO R9700 for AI workloads. These sales are set to begin in July. NVIDIA also anticipates an $8 billion revenue impact in Q2 due to licensing constraints affecting its H20 chip sales in China, following a $4.5 billion hit in Q1.

Andrzej Janik, the creator of ZLUDA, a tool that allows CUDA code to run on GPUs from AMD and Intel, has open sourced the project after both companies dropped their support. Originally developed as a means to enable Intel GPUs to run CUDA applications, Janik left Intel and was contracted by AMD to continue developing ZLUDA. However, AMD also discontinued its support for the project. ZLUDA, now based on AMD's ROCm solution and supporting only Radeon GPUs, is considered complete and will only receive updates for specific workloads. Despite lacking corporate backing, ZLUDA has shown promise in allowing CUDA software to run on AMD GPUs.

Intel, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and AMD are working on developing AI PCs as we move towards AI-powered features in Windows. Microsoft has set requirements for OEMs to build an AI PC, including the integration of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), latest CPUs and GPUs, and access to the Copilot key. Some laptops, like Asus' ROG Zephyrus, have already shipped with Intel's Core Ultra chips but lack the Copilot key. Intel and Microsoft are hoping OEMs will meet the requirements over time. Intel is also expanding its AI PC acceleration program to engage software developers and hardware vendors.

Companies are finding a new way to utilize quantum algorithms before the maturity of quantum hardware by running them on chips used for AI. This simulation process has been boosted by the increasing computing power of graphics-processing units (GPUs) and other advanced chips. GPUs are well-suited for running quantum algorithms due to their ability to handle dense math and high bandwidth memory. Although simulation has its limitations, it can accelerate research and deliver better results than traditional computing setups. As quantum hardware matures, GPU computing could still have a role to play, including in error correction.
