The European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) has decided that Apple's iMessage will not be designated as a "core platform service", thus avoiding tough new obligations such as interoperability with other messaging services. Similarly, Microsoft's Edge browser, Bing search engine, and advertising business have also not been designated as core platform services. The decision follows a five-month investigation by the European Commission, and although Apple's App Store and iOS operating system were deemed core platform services, iMessage was held off for further investigation. In contrast, meta's WhatsApp and Messenger have been designated as core platform services under the DMA. Apple recently announced support for the cross-platform RCS messaging standard on iPhones.
