AI’s biggest threat: Young people who can’t think
Livemint

AI's most significant threat lies in dependency that stifles critical and creative thinking among young people. While AI advances, like those historically from technologies like the printing press, reshape job landscapes, they don't necessarily eliminate jobs. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy's warning highlights that excessive reliance on AI may risk creating a generation unprepared for future roles, as they might lack essential thinking skills. The concern is that smart machines need even smarter humans.

Khosla, an investor in OpenAI, stated that the focus on risks associated with sentient AI is misplaced and not worth discussing. He has previously cautioned against overestimating the risks posed by AI and emphasized the benefits it brings to humanity. Khosla's views differ from those of Elon Musk, who has expressed concerns about the potential dangers of AI.

For the love of God, stop calling your AI a co-worker | TechCrunch

Many startups are giving AI tools human-like personas to market them as "co-workers," aimed at easing human job threat perceptions and appealing to overwhelmed hiring managers. This anthropomorphizing trend in AI can dehumanize real jobs, potentially leading to job displacement. Despite generative AI’s exciting possibilities, its packaging as colleagues rather than empowering tools might be more harmful, making the case for AI-enhanced productivity rather than job-replacing solutions.

Discipulus Ventures, a new accelerator program, aims to bring together young founders who share conservative values such as family, patriotism, and faith, and have a strong drive to revive a traditional Americana. The program focuses on hard tech, defense, and industry, with an emphasis on values-based, mission-driven companies. There's a gender gap among news influencers on social media, new Pew data shows

A new study from the Pew Research Center shows that male influencers outnumber female creators in delivering news on social media. The study analyzed a sample set of 500 news influencers with at least 100,000 followers and found that 63% were male and 30% were female. This gender gap is notable considering that there is a narrower gender divide among working US journalists and women tend to outnumber men in the influencer industry generally. The gender gap among social media news influencers could have an impact on what stories reach the public as creators take on a larger role in educating people about current events. This was seen in the 2024 US presidential election, where both parties targeted influencers to generate content around their campaigns. The study also revealed that there was a smaller gender gap in the overall audience for news content on social media among young people. While the influencers delivering news skewed slightly conservative, only around half of them explicitly shared their political orientation. As traditional newsrooms lose some trust, creators have become more influential in shaping the information landscape. Trust in information from national news organizations has decreased, while trust in information from social media has remained steady. YouTube had the biggest gender gap among news influencers, while TikTok's gap was minimal. TikTok has become an important news source for young adults, who use the platform for news commentary and on-the-ground videos related to current events.

What's the deal with social media and youth mental health?

Increased smartphone use and social media have been blamed for the rising mental health issues among young people. However, recent studies suggest that the relationship between social media and mental health is more complex. While the negative impact of social media cannot be ignored, positive experiences are also possible. Young people often face unrealistic standards and exposure to distressing content, but social media also provides connections, job opportunities, and mental health education. It is crucial to equip adolescents with skills to use social media safely and in a mentally healthy manner, emphasizing critical evaluation, cyberbullying response, and promoting balance with other activities. Social media companies also need to play a role in safeguarding young users' wellbeing.

According to a recent Pew survey, ChatGPT usage has increased among Gen Z, with 43% of Americans aged 18-29 stating they have used the chatbot, up from 33% in July last year. Interestingly, almost a third of young people claim to have used ChatGPT for work-related tasks. This suggests that young people are more open to embracing new technologies and are finding practical applications for AI-powered chatbots. These findings challenge the assumption that interest in AI has declined and highlight the need to consider multiple data points when analyzing trends.

Young adults who owned smartphones in elementary school experienced worse mental health in adulthood compared to those who got them later in their teens, according to a survey by Sapien Labs. The study, which surveyed over 27,000 young adults aged 18 to 24, found a significant relationship between the age of first smartphone ownership and adult mental health, particularly among women. Parental dilemmas around when to give their children a smartphone are further complicated by tech leaders like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, who raised their own kids with limited technology and delayed smartphone access.
