AI could consume more power than Bitcoin by the end of 2025
The Verge

Medial
AI could soon surpass Bitcoin mining in energy consumption, potentially using nearly half of all electricity consumed by global data centers by 2025. Despite efficiency gains, rising energy demands from expanding AI models and new data centers are contributing to this increase. The lack of transparency in reporting AI energy use and environmental impact by tech companies makes tracking and managing these demands challenging. Researchers urge for more efficient models and greater transparency in sustainability reporting.

Nvidia is using liquid cooling technology in its next-generation GB200 server racks to cool its Blackwell chips. By circulating liquid through the hardware, it aims to reduce power consumption and increase computing power. Traditional data centers use air cooling, which is less efficient. The move comes as data centers are expected to consume 8% of US power demand by 2030, up from 3% currently. Liquid cooling is already a common feature in high-end gaming computers and could be the future for higher-end AI applications. However, there are challenges with leaks and component shortages.

Indian electric ride-hailing startup BluSmart has partnered with Tata Power to power its fleet of electric cabs with solar energy. Under the agreement, Tata Power will supply 30MW to BluSmart's entire fleet of 6,000 electric cabs in Delhi NCR and Bengaluru. The electricity will be sourced from Tata Power's 200MW solar plant in Rajasthan and the agreement is for 20 years. This move will help BluSmart eliminate its Scope 2 emissions and reduce its electricity costs. BluSmart plans to expand its fleet to more than 10,000 cabs over the next few quarters and reach over 20,000 cabs by the end of 2025.

Micron Technology has begun mass production of its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) semiconductors for use in Nvidia's latest AI chip, causing its stock to rise over 5%. The HBM3E chip will consume 30% less power than competitors and help meet the increasing demand for chips powering generative AI applications. Designed for Nvidia's next-gen H200 graphic processing units, the chip is expected to surpass the current H100 chip, driving even more revenue for the chip manufacturer. Micron's entry into the HBM chip market also provides an alternative supplier for GPU makers such as AMD, Intel, and Nvidia.

Data centres are wary of sustainability push in govt’s AI mission GPU tender
Economic Times

- The government's IndiaAI Mission requires bidders of the GPU tender to have a power usage effectiveness (PUE) less than 1.35. - Achieving the required PUE could lead to increased capital expenditure for data centers, which may result in higher costs for customers. - PUE measures the energy efficiency of a data center, with lower ratios indicating better efficiency. - Some industry executives argue that the PUE criterion is difficult to achieve and should be removed to allow for the use of different technologies. - Water-based cooling solutions and dry coolers, which consume more electricity, are not sustainable in a water-scarce country like India. - Upgrading traditional data centers to technologies like direct-to-chip liquid cooling can help achieve better PUE.

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds great potential for solving global challenges like climate change, but its energy consumption is a growing concern. As demand for AI increases, so does the need for computational power, leading to a significant amount of energy usage. Research suggests that by 2030, AI could consume up to 3.5% of the world's electricity. To address this, steps can be taken to improve energy efficiency in AI chips, computers, and data centers, such as using liquid cooling and renewable energy sources. While AI's energy demands pose a trade-off, the technology also has the potential to contribute to mitigating climate change and achieving sustainability goals.

A new study reveals that generative AI models used for creating images can consume as much energy as charging a smartphone. The research, conducted by Hugging Face and Carnegie Mellon, examines the environmental impact of generative AI models, specifically highlighting the high energy consumption of image generation tasks. Multipurpose models like ChatGPT were found to be more energy-intensive than task-specific models. The study calls for awareness of the environmental cost of AI and suggests using smaller models in contexts where tasks are well-defined.

Analysts predict Bitcoin could reach $250,000 by 2025 due to several factors: post-halving supply dynamics reducing new coin issuance, the introduction of Spot Bitcoin ETFs by institutions like BlackRock boosting capital inflow, Bitcoin's role as a hedge against fiat currency devaluation, and its use as a store of value in economically unstable regions. Additionally, on-chain data suggests Bitcoin is undervalued. However, potential investors should exercise caution due to inherent risks in the cryptocurrency market.

A proposed AI data center in Wyoming may soon consume more electricity than the state's residents. The facility, a project by energy company Tallgrass and AI developer Crusoe, would start at 1.8 gigawatts, eventually growing to 10 gigawatts—far exceeding the state's current electricity use. The project will rely on its own gas and renewable energy sources. Though local regulators must approve, Wyoming’s governor supports the venture for its potential economic benefits.
