2005–2006, Apple was secretly working on what would become the iPhone. It was a revolutionary idea: a phone with a touchscreen, no keyboard, and smooth gestures like pinch-to-zoom. Very few people knew what was coming. At the same time, Google was working on its own mobile plans. They had quietly acquired a small startup called Android Inc. in 2005, led by Andy Rubin. At first, Android looked more like a BlackBerry physical keyboard, basic UI not very innovative. Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, even joined Apple’s board of directors in 2006, while Android was still in early development. Google and Apple were close. Google Maps was pre-installed on the iPhone.
