CEO Micro Managing engineers Hi, I am working in a early stage startup and our CEO has established the culture of transparency where he shares every update regarding company funding, customer sales, revenue and answers all questions within company but one thing that has been bugging me is his micromanaging. He has integrated a bot in slack which ask for what did you do yesterday ? and what are you going to do today ? , Everyday He also managed a spreadsheet of our tasks and takes the exact estimate in days makes a calendar view there and keeps asking up to update on our tasks progress in multiple meetings or on chat. I didn't had such experience in prior companies but he mentioned, such things were being followed in NyKa, DineOut, etc as well Does the well known companies like Phonepe, Uber, Zomato, google, amazon, Microsoft, De shaw, sprinklr follow this as well ? I just wanna check, is he doing too much or it this a standard in Indian companies ?

As usual, shitty! Toxic traits of startups, in the name of hustle culture they exploite there employees, what popularly known as toxic positivity, I would recommend change ur job as soon as possible otherwise this toxic positivity could ruine ur career as well as ur mental health as well.
As far as I know it sounds like daily standup which is not much in my experience. This is definitely not micromanaging in my opinion. It also depends on the person how he manages after getting a response from everyone, I am guessing that probably is harsh which makes this feel like micromanaging. Else it is pretty common to get a progress report on a daily basis, for their own estimate and all. What is the size of your company?

When a startup scales rapidly, the engineering team often grows quickly as well. Management may expect the same level of output as when the team was smaller, even though processes were not yet in place. What needs to happen instead is having a strong communicator on the team who can convince upper management why a feature will take time, and that this will be the new standard pace going forward. This requires changing their metrics for measuring progress.
Bro, it's very common in IT industry. What you're experiencing is nothing. Do you get your screen casted while you code or work? I've gone through that also. 😀 And from business person POV, It's great. And from employee ( modern day majdoor ) POV, it's phaking nonsense.

I've seen similar issues at other startups. One solution that worked for us was implementing OKRs (Objectives and Key Results). It allows for clear goals and measurable outcomes without the need for constant check-ins.
I can relate. I’ve seen this at smaller startups where the CEO is very hands-on. It's not necessarily a standard, but some leaders think it's necessary for keeping things on track. It’s definitely more common in startups compared to large companies like Microsoft or Amazon.
I think he's doing too much. Micromanagement can lead to burnout and a lack of trust. While it's important to have structure, there should also be room for autonomy. Maybe propose a less frequent update schedule to see if it helps?

I've worked at a few big tech firms, and while they value transparency, the level of micromanagement you're describing is not common. Most companies trust their engineers to manage their own time and tasks, focusing on results rather than daily updates.
Wow, that sounds intense. Micromanaging can be a real morale killer, especially in a startup where flexibility and creativity are key. In my experience, most big companies like Google and Amazon have regular check-ins but not to the extent of daily detailed updates. It might be worth discussing the impact on your productivity with him.
lol. This sounds like a sales job much more than an engineering job.
