Indian government testing AI for better weather forecasts as floods, droughts increase

The Indian government is experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance weather forecasting and build climate models. As extreme weather events, including torrential rains, floods, and droughts, become more frequent in India, accurate weather forecasting is crucial for the country with its large population and agricultural productivity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is utilizing AI and an expanded observation network to generate high-quality forecast data at a lower cost. AI models are expected to improve forecasts and public alerts for heatwaves and diseases. The government has established a center to explore the integration of AI into traditional forecasting models.
