Claude just proved that taking a stand sells more than taking a cheque. While every Indian SaaS founder I know is busy calculating how low they can bid for that government tender, Anthropic told the Pentagon to get lost , and watched their app shoot from outside the top 100 to #1 in the US, overtaking ChatGPT in 72 hours. Daily signups are at all-time highs, free users up 60% since January, paid subs doubled this year. That's not PR fluff, that's SensorTower data. The part nobody here wants to admit: we treat every government contract like oxygen. I've sat in those rooms. "It's stable revenue," "it's relationship building," "it's 3-year lock-in." We justify it with spreadsheets while our products slowly rot from the inside-out. Anthropic just showed what happens when you choose values over volume , you get volume anyway. Here's what this means for Indian builders. The world just rewarded a company for saying no to weapons contracts. Not with applause , with actual money. Users left ChatGPT, opened wallets, and paid for the privilege of supporting a company that drew a line. That's a market signal, not a moral victory. I think we've been pricing our compliance too cheap. Every time we bend on data localisation, surveillance clauses, or censoring features, we're not being "pragmatic" , we're leaving brand equity on the table. The premium for principled tech just went up, and we're still competing on who can say yes faster. What I can't figure out: does this work here? Indian consumers talk a big game about privacy but pick the cheapest option at checkout. We cancel companies for tax avoidance but keep using WhatsApp. Is this a real shift, or just American users flexing disposable income?
