🌍 From a Fridge Factory to the "Nobel of Geosciences" A huge moment for the global climate community! Indian-origin climate scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan has been awarded the 2026 Crafoord Prize in Geosciences by the The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Often referred to as the "Nobel of Geosciences," this prize recognizes Ramanathan’s 50-year journey in decoding the invisible forces shaping our planet's future. 🔬 The Discovery That Changed Everything In 1975, while working at NASA, Ramanathan made a discovery that shocked the scientific world. Before his research, the world believed CO₂ was the only major driver of global warming. Ramanathan proved that Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) - then common in refrigerators and spray cans - were up to 10,000 times more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. This breakthrough shifted the entire focus of climate science toward "super-pollutants" like methane, HFCs, and black carbon. The Indian Connection --- Born in Madurai and trained at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Ramanathan’s roots deeply influenced his work. He led the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX), which discovered "Atmospheric Brown Clouds" over South Asia. This research was pivotal in understanding how air pollution: - Weakens the Indian Monsoon. - Accelerates the melting of Himalayan glaciers. - Directly impacts the health of millions in developing nations. 🕊️ A Voice for Ethics Ramanathan hasn't just stayed in the lab. As an advisor to Pope Francis and a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, he has consistently bridged the gap between hard science and human ethics, arguing that climate change is a moral issue because it disproportionately affects the world's most vulnerable people. At 81, he continues to inspire the next generation of climate advocates to focus on "bending the curve" of emissions through science-based policy and grassroots leadership.
