OpenAIโs ChatGPT App Store marks a big shift. The company is moving from being a product to a full platform. This could reshape the AI landscape entirely. First: Intelligence isnโt the advantage anymore. Software rarely wins on features alone. Salesforce succeeded because companies built workflows, integrations, and processes around it. With AI embedded in daily work, habit-not accuracy-becomes the real barrier. Habits are hard to break. Second: The long tail is now open. No company can predict every niche need. Millions of developers experimenting on a platform can. Apple didnโt foresee every iPhone use case-developers did, and Apple adopted the best ideas. OpenAI will do the same. Third: Standalone AI tools are at risk. Apps like PDF readers, contract analyzers, and email tools can now become native platform features. Founders must choose: integrate as a plugin and lose control, build something unique, or fade away. Platforms are reclaiming value once captured by startups. Fourth: Competitors are taking different paths. Google embeds AI into Docs, Gmail, and Maps to keep users locked in. Anthropic bets on fewer, high-quality apps. Meta leans into open source, letting developers build without a central store. Same goal: become the operating system for human thought. The takeaway: The AI race isnโt just about models. Models are infrastructure, APIs will commoditize, and marketplaces will dominate. The fight is now App Store vs App Store. Whoever owns user workflows and habits controls the bridge between humans and intelligence-and everything else risks becoming a plugin.
