Born in 1993 in Bissam Cuttack, Odisha, he developed an interest in technology and entrepreneurship from a young age. At 17, he moved to Delhi to pursue his startup dreams and began exploring budget travel and hotel experiences in India. He started his first venture, Oravel Stays, in 2012 as a platform for booking budget accommodations. In 2013, he pivoted Oravel into OYO Rooms after realizing the need for standardized budget hotel experiences. He became the first Indian to win the Thiel Fellowship, receiving a $100,000 grant to work full-time on OYO. OYO expanded rapidly across India and later to international markets like China, the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia. His leadership turned OYO into a multi-billion-dollar company, backed by investors like SoftBank and Sequoia Capital. Despite facing challenges like regulatory issues, profitability concerns, and the COVID-19 pandemic, he continues to innovate and adapt. Ritesh is seen as a Gen Z icon for his risk-taking mindset, resilience, and ability to disrupt a traditional industry at a very young age.
