Did you know hashtags had an inventor? I didn’t. Until yesterday. We use hashtags almost everywhere, LinkedIn, Instagram, X (Twitter), YouTube, but rarely stop to think: who came up with this tiny symbol that organizes the chaos of the internet? Turns out, it was Chris Messina. Back in 2007, he proposed using the "#" sign as a way to group conversations online. At the time, it sounded strange. Some even thought it wouldn’t work. And yet today, hashtags are one of the most powerful tools for discovery, reach, and community-building across all major platforms. Learning this made me pause. It’s a reminder that sometimes the simplest ideas, the ones we take for granted are the ones that change how the world communicates. Thanks to Peerlist for making me aware of this. Now I’m curious… Did you already know who invented hashtags? Or was this new for you too?
