India will always lean towards being a service-driven economy rather than a manufacturing or product-driven one. Why? Because our culture and ecosystem glorify “a day in the life of a techie” — the dream sold to the middle class. Everyone wants the stable IT job, the MNC paycheck, the on-site dream. Very few want to take the risk of building core products, infrastructure, or manufacturing capacity. That’s why we dominate in services and outsourcing but lag when it comes to product innovation or global-scale cloud platforms. Until the mindset shifts from “safe service jobs” to “risky product building,” we’ll keep fueling others’ innovation instead of leading it.
