So much talk is going around about India developing its own social networks. But to be honest, nobody started out to be where they are today. For example.. Youtube was a Dating website! Yes, YouTube was originally conceived as a video-dating site by its co-founders, they even used the slogan "Tune in, Hook up" but users didn't embrace the dating concept. Then pivoted after this to video sharing which blew up. Similarly, Twitter was created as an SMS-based platform for groups of friends to share short status updates, similar to text messaging, but public and interactive. I remember using Twitter on my Nokia phone... now look where it has reached today. Meanwhile Hike shutdown, Sharechat... what is even that? Zomato being so popular launched District app taking off restaurant reviews which was their core idea at launch. Why are Indian founders not pushing boundaries, doing A/B testing. Seems like we Indians want 'revenue on day 1' while in the West its more about 'Fuck it, lets see what we can do with this.' What do you think?
