The four books that built build3 People often ask what influences how we live, work, and build at build3. Over the years, I’ve found myself returning to these four books that have deeply shaped our culture, our choices, and the whole spirit of what build3 is 1. Reinventing Organizations by Frederic Laloux The most elegant philosophy we’ve found on how organizations can be run. Self-management, hiring, budgeting, conflict resolution, the role of a CEO, it’s all in there. It’s become our go-to guide for how we build teams and structure work. 2. The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer A reminder that not everything has to be willed into being. Singer’s story showed us how life can unfold beautifully when you stop forcing and start listening. It’s changed how many of us live and lead. With less control, more trust. 3. Startup Communities by Brad Feld A field manual for building startup ecosystems, exactly what we do at build3. Brad’s journey of building Boulder’s startup scene gave us inspiration for our own: founder-led, long-term, inclusive ecosystems that grow from the ground up. 4. Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard A story of building a company with heart. Patagonia didn’t just chase growth; it led with purpose, empathy, and care for the planet. This book reminds us why we’re doing this and what kind of company we want to become. Over the years, these four books have become integral to who we are, to our DNA. They show up in our systems, in our hiring, in how we resolve conflict, and in how we surrender to what wants to emerge. Curious to know which books have influenced your building journey the most? Do share in the comments.
