A Close Call – My Father Outsmarted a Professional Scammer Just a few days after I joined my father's company, something unexpected happened that turned into a lesson for all of us. My father received a call from someone claiming to be S.K. Dey, the General Manager of Tata Steel Ltd., Jamshedpur Head Office. The man spoke fluently, dropped industry references, and offered an almost unbelievable deal—200 containers every month with full advance payment. Naturally, we were thrilled. The offer seemed like a golden ticket. He even claimed to have been referred by a cousin of ours who works in a similar field. The entire pitch felt calculated and oddly accurate, as if it was tailor-made for us. My father, however, with all his experience, still felt something wasn’t right. That evening, he discussed it with us. We were hopeful, yet cautious. The next morning, the truth came out. The same person called again—this time, casually slipping in a request for ₹10,000 to "proceed" with the deal. That was the turning point. My father, calm and composed, asked him to email from an official Tata Steel domain. The man dodged. Then pushed harder for the money. But dad didn’t budge. Eventually, frustrated and exposed, the scammer hung up. That moment was bittersweet. The opportunity was fake, but the choice my father made was right. It made us realise how sophisticated these scammers are. Their scripts are crafted with such precision—they speak the industry language, mimic cargo descriptions, and even copy-paste images from Google. They waste hours of genuine businesspeople and directors just to fish out a few thousands from the unsuspecting. Not this time. I’m proud of my father, not just for being cautious, but for being principled when it mattered most. Stay sharp out there. Scams are evolving faster than we think.
