🤯🤯 Researchers in Florida have pioneered a method to generate “man-made” lightning, known as rocket-triggered lightning, at the University of Florida’s International Center for Lightning Research and Testing. Florida’s high frequency of lightning strikes per square mile makes it an ideal location for this research. The technique involves launching rockets with trailing copper wires into storm clouds, creating a conductive path for lightning to follow. When conditions are right, this setup triggers a lightning bolt to strike a specific target, vaporizing the wire and creating a controlled plasma channel. This allows scientists to study lightning’s physics in real-time, safely observing and measuring its properties. By doing so, they gain valuable insights into lightning’s behavior and formation. The insights gained are valuable not only for pure research but also for improving safety protocols for buildings, aircraft, and electrical systems that are vulnerable to lightning damage.
