YouTube once had its own private chat feature... and not many remember it. Yep, there was a time when you could share a video, react with emojis, chat about it with your friends — all within the YouTube app. No hopping over to WhatsApp or Telegram. Just watch, share, and vibe together. The screenshots here say it all — there was a full-fledged message inbox, emojis flying around, heart reacts, even suggestions like "Add from phone book" to bring in friends. It was basic, but honestly, it worked. It was enough. But despite being this simple, clean, and so on brand for YouTube, the feature was removed in 2019. Why? YouTube said they wanted to “focus on public conversations like comments, posts, and stories.” Basically, it didn’t get the engagement numbers they hoped for — so they shelved it. Classic “low usage = no point in maintaining it” logic. Still, this felt like one of those rare cozy corners of the internet — not too fancy, not too noisy. Just a way to share that one dumb video and laugh about it with your people. 🥲 Sometimes, it's the simplest things that go unnoticed — until they're gone.
