The Indian government has announced the removal of the 20% export duty on onions, effective from April 1, 2025. This decision comes in response to a significant increase in rabi onion production, which is estimated at 227 lakh metric tonnes—an 18% rise compared to the previous year's 192 LMT. Despite these curbs, India exported approximately 17.17 lakh metric tonnes of onions in the financial year 2023-24, and 11.65 LMT up to March 18, 2025, in the current fiscal year. Monthly exports increased from 0.72 LMT in September 2024 to 1.85 LMT in January 2025, indicating sustained global demand. The removal of the export duty aims to balance the interests of farmers and consumers by ensuring remunerative prices for producers while maintaining affordability for consumers. The decision is expected to enhance India's competitiveness in the global onion market and provide relief to farmers facing declining prices
