𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 — 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 Meta (Facebook’s parent company) does something most AI companies don’t: 𝐈𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐈 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞. While others close off access and charge for usage, Meta open-sources powerful tools like 𝐋𝐋𝐚𝐌𝐀 for the public. At first, this looks like a loss. But when you zoom out—it’s a 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞. Here’s why: 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮’𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 Meta doesn't rely on selling software or APIs. It makes money from 𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 across its platforms — Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp. So the goal isn’t to sell AI. The goal is to 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 that feeds Meta’s core business. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 1. 𝐀𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 > 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 When more people use Meta’s models, it becomes the standard. Standards dominate markets. 2. 𝐌𝐨𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 Every startup or tool built on Meta’s models makes Meta harder to ignore — and harder to replace. 3. 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 Meta doesn’t want to win the AI model war. It wants to 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐧. 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐝: Open-source OS. Now powers 70%+ of smartphones. Google wins through search and ads on top — not Android itself. 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐱: Free OS, adopted globally. Red Hat and others built billion-dollar companies by supporting it — not owning it. 𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐈𝐀 𝐂𝐔𝐃𝐀: Made GPU software free. Result? Every AI tool today is trained on NVIDIA hardware. Platform lock-in. 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 • Meta’s open-source AI will quietly dominate global enterprise usage — because it’s free, flexible, and fast to adapt. • Closed AI models (like OpenAI’s GPT-4) will struggle in B2B long-term — due to control, compliance, and cost issues. • The future of AI power lies not in selling intelligence, but in becoming the default infrastructure behind it. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 In business, power often comes from 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, not the front-facing product. 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭 didn't win with the best OS — it won by becoming the default on every PC. 𝐀𝐖𝐒 didn’t win by locking people in — it won by making cloud services easy and everywhere. 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚 is doing the same with AI — using openness as a growth engine.
