I recently attended a startup summit that, unfortunately, turned out to be a complete waste of time — not because of the ideas or the energy of young entrepreneurs, but because of the way the event was organized. Day 1was lost in ceremonial celebrations and felicitations. Despite many promising ideas present at the venue, there was hardly any genuine interest shown by the audience or the so-called “experts.” Day 2, during the pitch sessions, startups were given just 90 seconds to present their months—sometimes years—of hard work, followed by long, directionless talks by “industry giants” who spoke everything except what mattered. To the organizers and attendees who represent the investor and mentor ecosystem: Disparity comes from ignorance. Please, listen carefully. Every startup is solving something meaningful. You are not a Maha-Manav (superhuman) to judge everything in 90 seconds. If we really want to build an inclusive and impactful startup culture, let’s begin by valuing time, ideas, and intent — not just showbiz and selfies. Let’s do better.
