Did Microsoft deliberately kill Skype? Or did Shype die because the World changed? Here is what happened: - In 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 Billion! - In 2015-17: Mobile-first apps like Whatsapp, Messenger, Telegram gained popularity - In 2016-17: Zoom & Slack became popular with better, simple collaborations amd integrations - In 2017: Microsoft introduced Teams! - In 2025: Microsoft deletes Skype Reasons why Skype started falling: 1. Lack of Innovation: Skype failed to evolve with changing user behavior, technology, and communication trends 2. Slow market adaptation: It was late to embrace mobile-first, cloud-based, and remote work communication tools 3. Weak mobile experience: The app remained heavy, slow, and less efficient compared to lightweight competitors 4. Frequent confusing updates: Unnecessary UI changes frustrated users, making the platform harder to navigate 5. Loss of consumer focus: Microsoft repositioned Skype for businesses, losing everyday users to WhatsApp and Zoom 6. Strong competition: Zoom, WhatsApp, Slack, and Telegram offered better and more user-friendly alternatives 7. High resource consumption: Skype was inefficient, consuming more bandwidth and device power than competitors 8. Weaker security & privacy: Competitors introduced stronger encryption and better data protection policies 9. Late response to trends: Ignored emerging trends like video conferencing dominance and team collaboration features 10. Better workplace solutions availability: Slack and Microsoft Teams became superior choices for businesses and professionals We didnt use it for years. But was it our fault, or did Microsoft acquire it and deliberately kill it? What do you think? Was it right for Microsoft to acquire & compete it with Teams?
