Just found out about a company that sends free TVs in exchange for showing ads full-time. This is Telly, an American TV company founded by Ilya Pozin in 2021. It’s a 55-inch dual-screen TV—you can watch anything on the main screen, while the second screen constantly displays widgets along with ads. Telly started delivering TVs in 2023, and while exact numbers aren’t available, estimates suggest it has shipped thousands. Now, as you can clearly see, the company makes money from ads (and from personal data). So let’s do the math. A 30-second ad costs $0.01–$0.03 in the US on YouTube. And a 55-inch TV costs about $500. If someone watches 2 hours of TV daily, that would mean 240 ads per day (120 minutes × 2 ads per minute), generating around $2.40 in ad revenue. At that rate, the TV’s cost would be recovered in 209 days ($500 ÷ $2.40), which kinda makes sense. That’s probably why Telly has already raised over $65 million. What do you think?
