"Most CAs stop learning the moment they get their prefix." That’s what a senior Chartered Accountant told me when I asked him my favorite question—his thoughts on the quality of CAs today and the credibility of the profession. He explained, “A CA who doesn’t keep up with industry reports, regulations, and business trends is like a doctor who never updates himself on new treatments. The certificate gets you in the door, but staying relevant is a daily effort.” I remember sitting in a meeting where a senior leader asked for insights on a notification released by CBDT. No one had read the update. Including me. He looked around and said, “As a CA, you are supposed to know this, right?” Technical knowledge is just the foundation. If we aren’t operationally efficient—able to analyze numbers, solve problems, and drive business decisions—we’re just glorified compliance officers. The credibility of our profession isn’t set in stone. It’s up to us to build it.
