The HONEY SCAM Explained! So, Honey is a free-to-use Chrome extension started in 2012 by George Ruan and Ryan Hudson as a tool that helps you find the best coupon code while making a purchase. It was later aquired in 2020 by PayPal for $4 Billion! And that's exactly when the scam starts. 1) Affiliate Scam Whenever you click on a product link that you found online, it’s mostly an affiliate link. An affiliate link comes with a unique code of the influencer, and if you purchase using the affiliate link, the creator gets a commission. However, what Honey does is, when you reach the final checkout page, it will try a few coupons to save money. And at the same time, it replaces the unique affiliate code with its own code stealing influencer's commision! So, no matter where you discovered the product, Honey will get paid! 2) Business Partnerships If you're a business, you can pay and partner with Honey so that it only uses low-value discount coupons. For eg, if Amazon partnered with Honey, it would only apply low-value coupon codes during checkout. That way scamming customers. This way, As a consumer, you don't get the best discounts, As a influencer, Honey is stealing your aff link commisions and As a business owner, you're paying Honey to loose less on discounts. Honey was sponsored by the biggest creators including Mr Beast and PewDiePie , and have a 17 active Million Users Thus making it the biggest SCAM in the Creator Economy!
