The shocking story of why Musk is building AI to battle AI: In 2015, Elon Musk worried about Google’s fast progress in AI, fearing it wasn’t being developed responsibly. To change this, he co-founded OpenAI in 2016 with Sam Altman and others, promising $1 billion to create safe AI that benefits everyone. OpenAI started strong, launching tools like OpenAI Gym. But by 2018, Musk felt they were falling behind. He suggested merging OpenAI with Tesla, but the team refused, staying true to OpenAI’s mission. Musk left soon after. In 2023, worried about how AI was being developed, Musk launched GrokAI. His goal? Build safer AI that aligns with human values.
