In 2013, Elon Musk proposed a colony on Mars. He says it's not for exploration—it's for survival. Now, Musk's vision is becoming a reality... SpaceX plans to launch 5 uncrewed ships to Mars by 2026. Here's why Elon is convinced that Mars is our species' only backup plan: Earth could face big disasters, like an asteroid or nuclear war. Elon Musk thinks Mars is the best place for humans to go if that happens. Mars has a lot of challenges, like a thin atmosphere and dangerous dust storms, but it’s our best chance. SpaceX is planning to send ships to Mars to test things like landing and building habitats. If those missions succeed, humans could go to Mars in a few years. The goal is to create a city on Mars that can survive without help from Earth. This colony would follow rules agreed by all countries. Mars could be our backup if something bad happens to Earth.
