Google announces free access of Maps for Indian developers Google announces free access of Maps for Indian developers to help build better solutions. Google has taken a monumental step to empower developers worldwide. Starting in March 2025, Google will offer free access to Google Maps Platform. Indian developers stand to gain significantly from this decision, with products like Maps, Routes, Places, and Environment APIs becoming more accessible than ever before. This initiative aims to foster innovation and help developers build better, more impactful solutions. Unprecedented Support for Indian Developers For Indian developers, the announcement is particularly transformative. Google now provides up to $6,800 worth of free usage every month. This is a significant upgrade from the existing $200 monthly credit. These free credits apply to all products, enabling developers to experiment, innovate, and scale their projects without incurring significant costs initially. Google had already introduced India-specific pricing, reducing costs by up to 70% on most APIs. The collaboration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) further provides up to 90% off on selected APIs. Key Features and Benefits 1. Broad Range of Products Available for Free Developers can now explore advanced features like Dynamic Maps, Nearby Search, and Place Details. The Maps Embed API and Maps SDK will continue offering unlimited free usage. 2. Seamless Integration for Diverse Solutions Indian developers can integrate features like Places Nearby or Dynamic Street View into their apps. This flexibility allows for creating proof-of-concept projects, such as delivery services using the Routes API, without upfront financial commitments. 3. Harnessing AI for Localised Solutions Google is leveraging AI-driven tools to address India’s unique needs. Additionally, APIs like the Air Quality API enable developers to build solutions catering to environmental and health-conscious users. 4. Expansive Coverage in India Google Maps Platform now covers over 7 million kilometres of roads, 300 million buildings, and 35 million businesses and places across India. This comprehensive data ensures developers can rely on accurate, real-time information to create impactful solutions. The Implications for Innovation By offering expanded free access, Google is lowering the barrier to entry for startups and small businesses. From logistics companies optimising delivery routes to travel apps offering dynamic itineraries, the possibilities are endless. Developers in India now have a chance to create customised, hyperlocal solutions that address the country’s diverse needs. A Step Towards a Smarter Future Google’s efforts to enhance developer access also align with its commitment to supporting India’s digital ecosystem. The integration of AI and localised features demonstrates Google’s focus on delivering tools that cater to the complexities of Indian markets.

OLA maps are good but not as optimised as Google maps. OLA maps lacks in getting the flexibility and functionality which Google map offers.
