The Surprise Election Night Winner: Perplexity On Tuesday, two AI startups, xAI and Perplexity, tried to position their chatbots as reliable, real-time sources of information during the high-stakes presidential election. Elon Musk's Grok, however, failed almost instantly, providing incorrect answers about race outcomes before the polls had even closed. In contrast, Perplexity offered helpful, real-time election insights and maps throughout the night. The startup linked to credible resources and provided historical context where appropriate. Perplexity took a risk, and it paid off. Just last week, Perplexity had announced the launch of its election information hub. The hub featured real-time maps populated with voting data from Democracy Works and the Associated Press - the same sources that power Google's election map. This approach differed from that of most other AI chatbots, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini, which simply refused to answer questions related to the election. It's understandable why many AI labs decided to sit out this election. It was the safe and responsible choice, as these systems have been known to produce embarrassing hallucinations in the past year.
