“How Jio made it’s competitors go out of Business” Disruption Diaries #2 Reliance Jio was launched on Sep 2016.Initially Jio provided free data services for several months to attract many customers. Before Jio data was expensive,and Voice call and SMS charges were also high compared to international standards.Jio introduced free voice calls and SMS offered data at unprecedentedly low prices this forced competitors to lower their tariffs to retain customers. Users faced issue with frequent call drops and connectivity problem,Data speeds were slow, and users experienced delays and buffering while using internet services.Jio built an extensive network across India ensuring highspeed internet even in rural areas. Competitors had to slash their prices to stay in business several players exited the market and major players like Vodafone and Idea merged to compete with Jio. Jio not only disrupted the telecom industry it also contributed to the growth of India’s digital economy.
