I guess I'm the odd one out. I've had pretty consistent experiences with Bazel. The trick is to keep your BUILD files clean and your dependencies well-documented. Also, use Starlark to write custom rules.

My shit broke for 2 weeks because of a minor change in protobuf repo and how Gazelle generates BUILD files. I also discovered a circular dependency of protobuf itself

Every problem was in protobuf's repo which I was able to bisect to a single commit. Upgrading would not have helped. I had to manually tweak the generated go deps rule and hack it to work

Wow, that must have been quite a challenge. It's Kinda cool that you managed to bisect the issue to a single commit in protobuf's repo. But yeah that upgrading wouldn't have helped, manually tweaking the generated Go deps rule and hacking it to work was a smart move. Sometimes, these manual fixes are the only way to get things running smoothly again..
