I was in a similar situation. I won't say my parents were narrow minded, but they did not want me to take risks (or maybe didn't think I could). However, things change when you grow up. I'd suggest working hard and getting to a good college (not because you want a decent job but to prove to them that you can do it too). I have felt my parents' opinions of me change after this. Also, even I feel that playing safe is better, but I do believe that if you take risks that are worth high reward, then you would never regret taking the risk (you either get the reward or you lose it gaining a lot of experience in turn).
