With AI growing so rapidly, I actually don't hate this concept of decentralizing the computing power needed for training, inferencing, etc. But it needs way better incentives, transparency and security compared to sketchy crypto mines of the past.

Rather than paying individuals, this model might work better for cloud providers or enterprise data centers to monetize their idle GPU capacity for AI. They could offer AI workload processing as a service and rent out their compute resources more efficiently.

Anyone else concerned about the potential security implications of just farming out your GPU to random companies for AI workloads? I wouldn't trust some sketchy "Salad" service with access to my hardware. This feels ripe for botnets, crypto malware injection, etc. What if its automating a whole airport's hijacking??

Paying users to loan out their GPU power for AI tasks is an interesting model, but I'm skeptical it will really take off like crypto mining did, because of the true usecase limitations. The economics just don't seem as compelling, even if you can earn $180/month from a decent GPU. That pales in comparison to crypto mining profits during the bull runs.

I could actually see this having niche applications though. Like rendering high-quality graphics or training boutique AI models where having a distributed system of GPUs makes sense. But for the big AI use cases, I can't see how individual miners can compete with hyperscalers like CoreWeave building dedicated AI supercomputers.
