Getting hands-on experience is so valuable, even for entry-level roles. Can you start by managing social accounts for student orgs, a business you're a customer of, local non-profits, etc? Start building a portfolio of content, campaigns and strategies you've executed. Having a personal audience and brand yourself also helps demonstrate your skills.

Don't sleep on skills like basic graphic design (Canva, Photoshop), video editing, and photo editing. So much of being a good social media strategist is creating engaging visual content. You also need to deeply understand your brand's audience and voice. Consider getting certifications in social media marketing from platforms like Udemy

I'd say the most important skills are strong writing/communication abilities, creativity for campaigns/content, analytical skills to interpret metrics, and being very organized/detail-oriented.
