Tech Explained #2 - RAM i) What is RAM? Imagine a sculptor with a cluttered workspace. Finding the right tools (data) takes time, slowing down their work. Now, picture a clean, organized workbench holding the essential tools for the current project. That's RAM, or Random Access Memory, in a nutshell. It's the computer's short-term memory, a high-speed holding area for data the CPU needs to actively process. Unlike long-term storage on a hard drive, RAM is volatile. ii) How Does RAM Work? RAM boasts super-fast memory chips that can be accessed instantly from any location, thanks to its "random access" design. When you open a program, relevant files get pulled from the hard drive and loaded into RAM, making them readily available for the CPU. It's like grabbing the exact tools you need from your organized workbench - the CPU can retrieve information from RAM much faster than searching through the vast storage space of a hard drive.
