How to actually find and land internship roles in startup companies?! I've a friend whose dad's a VC so it's easy for him to navigate through this space. Whereas, I personally find it rather difficult to find roles.

Try searching for startups in the internet or LinkedIn of your field. Check out news stories of the companies which are going for funding or have already raised funding. Check out your nearby companies, interact with few people and then show your interest to them they'll definitely hire you. Another easy suggestion is that interact with your friend's dad (VC) and try to get the list of companies he have invested and write your interests to those companies.
