For my last startup, we had engineers on the founding team evaluate technical hires. As a non-technical, I mostly looked for solid communicators who were enjoyable to be around.

I've had success bringing in contractors for initial technical projects. Then co-founders or employees who proved themselves as solid hires during those projects.

You’ll find readymade interview scripts on roles (specific ones too) Secondly, talk to them about their vision after the initial testing round. What do they wanna build? What are they curious about? How eager are they to think outside the box, as it’s not a one day process. Curse todays vocabulary models, but there’s a particular “vibe” you should gel with, press on that.
