Our world is facing a big challenge: feeding 9.8 billion people by 2050! To meet this demand, we need to grow 70% more food. But how? Recent advancements have seen the introduction of tiny non-invasive sensors for real-time plant data. Traditional farming methods are time-consuming and costly, providing a macro view of all the crops. These innovative sensors can provide real-time updates on individual(micro view) plant health, water levels, and even detect early signs of disease. Two companies, Growvera and Phytech, have independently developed micro-sized needle sensors that insert into a plant’s leaves or stems to measure changes in electrical resistance. Data are transmitted wirelessly to a computer or mobile device, where they are analysed to generate insights about plant health. Although we still have challenges to tackle, like cost and data management( requiring specialized expertise), the potential for a more sustainable and efficient farming future is clear.
