There's a start up MeetURite based in bangalore that did something quite similar but focused on college students instead of making it generic.

I did work with their marketing team for a while when I was in college. I don't have the exact numbers or if the company is still working. According to my view the overall execution of the idea was really good initially but their intent was much bigger and with time the product had lost its focus so the product became very cluttered and like a super complicated social media.
