Writing from scratch will always trump everything else. Upgraded an auth service last year and barely was able to piece together apis. Wrote an auth service last month and had to learn atleast 10 new concepts.

Usually it's better to start with Production support working to know important processes, then doing small break fixes to the application. Can start enhancements to exisitng application later which gives clear picture why it's being done and what is being done

Both are a good opportunity to learn, but when you create any thing from scratch you basic fundamentals are more clear.
