YouTube Music team laid off by Google while workers testified to Austin City Council about working conditions

Google's parent company, Alphabet, has laid off the entire YouTube Music team amid rising tensions. The Alphabet Workers Union announced the layoffs, claiming that the team was receiving low pay and minimal benefits, with some employees working multiple jobs to make ends meet. The YouTube Music team had previously gone on strike in February 2023. Google has refused to negotiate with the union since their unionization vote in April 2023. The workers were contracted through Cognizant, who stated that the layoffs occurred after their contract ended. The layoffs come as Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, faces calls for his resignation due to increased competition and recent failures in AI development.
