Starting July 22, YouTube will increase the minimum age for independent livestream hosting to 16 years, compared to the previous age of 13. Young creators below 16 can still livestream if supervised by an adult managing their account. This change encourages family co-creation and aims to ensure minors' online safety by reducing risks like cyberbullying. The policy alters how young users engage on the platform, requiring a layer of adult oversight.

YouTube has implemented new safety measures to protect young users, particularly teenagers, from harmful content. The platform will now limit the promotion of videos that focus on body image and physical attributes for teens. This decision was influenced by suggestions from an advisory committee, which highlighted the negative impact such content can have on teens' self-perception. YouTube will also revise its Community Guidelines to protect minors from harmful content. Additionally, crisis resource panels will be launched in European countries to provide support for users dealing with issues related to suicide and self-harm.

Wall Streetโs top regulator faces worsening battle in wake of Supreme Court ruling

The Supreme Court's recent ruling to curb federal agency powers, overturning a 1984 precedent, could have significant implications for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Legal experts suggest that the decision may limit the SEC's ability to establish new rules and invite more litigation. The ruling means that courts, rather than agencies, will determine if regulatory actions are within the law, potentially making it more challenging for the SEC to adapt its regulations to changing circumstances. This shift aligns with the broader conservative agenda to weaken federal agencies.

There's a gender gap among news influencers on social media, new Pew data shows

A new study from the Pew Research Center shows that male influencers outnumber female creators in delivering news on social media. The study analyzed a sample set of 500 news influencers with at least 100,000 followers and found that 63% were male and 30% were female. This gender gap is notable considering that there is a narrower gender divide among working US journalists and women tend to outnumber men in the influencer industry generally. The gender gap among social media news influencers could have an impact on what stories reach the public as creators take on a larger role in educating people about current events. This was seen in the 2024 US presidential election, where both parties targeted influencers to generate content around their campaigns. The study also revealed that there was a smaller gender gap in the overall audience for news content on social media among young people. While the influencers delivering news skewed slightly conservative, only around half of them explicitly shared their political orientation. As traditional newsrooms lose some trust, creators have become more influential in shaping the information landscape. Trust in information from national news organizations has decreased, while trust in information from social media has remained steady. YouTube had the biggest gender gap among news influencers, while TikTok's gap was minimal. TikTok has become an important news source for young adults, who use the platform for news commentary and on-the-ground videos related to current events.
