Wyze says camera breach let 13,000 customers briefly see into other people’s homes

Wyze, a smart home device company, experienced a service outage and a subsequent security incident. The outage, caused by an issue with their partner AWS, affected several hours of live camera viewing and events. During the outage recovery, some users received incorrect thumbnails and event videos from other users' cameras. About 13,000 users received the wrong thumbnails, and 1,504 users tapped on them. Wyze has identified the cause as a third-party caching client library that mixed up device and user ID mapping. They have implemented new verification measures and bypassed caching to prevent future occurrences. Wyze apologizes for the incident and is committed to rebuilding trust with customers.
