Researchers have discovered a flaw in the DNSSEC protocol that could potentially disable large portions of the internet for extended periods of time. The vulnerability, named KeyTrap, allows for long-lasting denial-of-service attacks, affecting applications such as web browsing, email, and instant messaging. A fix has been developed and is being deployed, with Akamai, Google, and Cloudflare already implementing patches. However, researchers suggest a reevaluation of the DNSSEC design philosophy to protect against future threats. Approximately one-third of internet users are susceptible to this flaw.
