Alphabet's self-driving company, Waymo, has begun testing its robotaxis in Atlanta as part of its expanding testing and deployment efforts. Initially, human-driven cars will be used to collect mapping data and become familiar with the city's environment. Eventually, Waymo aims to test fully autonomous robotaxis in Atlanta without a safety driver. Unlike many states, Georgia has minimal regulations on autonomous vehicles, allowing Waymo to operate its vehicles without a safety driver as long as it meets certain risk conditions. Waymo has not commented on any plans for commercial launch in Atlanta or other cities it is collecting mapping data in.
