US sanctions Chinese firm over potentially deadly ransomware attack

The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Chinese cybersecurity firm Sichuan Silence Information Technology Company and one of its employees for carrying out a dangerous cyberattack last year. The company deployed malicious software to over 80,000 firewalls worldwide, targeting thousands of companies. The attack aimed to steal data and deploy ransomware, posing a threat to critical infrastructure and potentially causing harm or loss of life. The employee, Guan Tianfeng, has been charged with conspiracy to commit computer and wire fraud, with a $10 million reward offered for information on him or the company's activities. Sichuan Silence has previously been linked to other malicious digital campaigns.
